Vastu – terapia ambientale

Mark Rosenberg

  • bilanciamento dell’energia - interazione fra luce e materia

Vastu – therapy of ambients

Mark Rosenberg

India’s scholars and scientists had already known it: Rooms, in which we live, sleep and work do influence our health and quality of life!
When hearing these words today, we primarily think of healthy building materials, of non-existent electric smog or concealed toxins, or we think of an architecture signalising light and openness, or also of a furnishing that radiates cosiness and gives relaxation.

What is it that makes ancient India’s traditional architecture so special? What part of it is logic architectural science and what part reflects rather an esoteric belief only?

Meaning

Vastu means ‘the place of a building’ and Shastra means ‘regularity’. Therefore we can translate Vastu Shastra as the ‘science of architecture and room’. Scholars and scientists of the high vedic culture studied their environment, nature and cosmos intensively. Doing so, they discovered cosmic laws and regularities that in the following were applied in order to provide mankind a maximum benefit in building temples, houses, residential buildings or business premises. They founded a building tradition, which later produced impressive evidence by including these laws and regularities. Therefore, we can find preserved monuments, amongst other dating back to India’s Gupta period (300 to 600 A.C.) and Vijayanagar period (1336 to 1646 A.C.).

The insights of this vedic science are based on the equilibrium of the five elements (earth, water, fire, air and space) and the insight that the human being will feel better if harmony between him and his natural environment is better. During Buddhism monks were taking this tradition to China where it has been advanced similarly and has become known under the notion of FengShui. However, specific local circumstances were involved there.

When Vastu-Shastra is applied holistically and coordinated according to present needs, it shall be a therapy for space and human being: One does not only cure and energise buildings or spatial forms, but we apply vastu as a tool in the first place in order to promote the individual or resident in their rooms and together with them. The internal order of realty, houses, offices or flats is relaxed and harmonised which has a direct effect on the people living in these rooms.

The work with vastu-shastra may be the key to initiating beneficial processes by:

  • finding the right place and “home” of the elements and functions
  • balancing energy – the interaction of light and matter
  • the soul of a room, which learns to “breathe” again
  • optimising and redefining proportions
  • improving and balancing relations to the surrounding – earth as well as cosmos – and to the inside

Vastu Purusha Mandala

Regarding its practical order and structure the basic principles of orient themselves by so called vastu purusha mandala – a matrix adjusted among other things to the points of the compass, planetary energies and the sun’s course. With its structure this matrix can be “laid on” all ground plans of buildings, specific rooms, landscapes and even on whole cities. It provides a clear orientation to the spectator regarding the cosmic and earthly order of the corresponding space, in which the specific areas are always to be considered as a whole thing, too.

Vastu purusha mandala is a symbol of absolute completeness. The basic principles of healthy living filled with energy derive directly from this. With this in mind it is highly beneficial when the building or flat to be analysed is adjusted with all its specific living areas to the points of the compass and when it has a clearly organised and comprehensible ground plan. For this purpose we use the rectangle, which according to the tradition of vastu-shastra is laid in specific proportions as for example the golden ratio. These basic principles are refined by individual calculations taking into consideration the residents’ conditions and characteristics.

The influences of magnetic fields

Within Vastu Shastra one can increasingly find natural scientific references that are leading the rules and regulations away from mysticism to holistic science. A basic topic of Vastu is for example the influence of magnetism on the spatial object and the used building material out of which several important principles of Vastu might be explained. Magnetic therapy is able to give an effective healing and magnetic waves, which permanently flow from north to south, do also play an important role in wildlife. Just think of the migrant birds that use this information for the purpose of orientation.

It is safe to assume that also our body and brain cells “know” the direction and therefore unconsciously know how the magnetic field forces flow. For millions of years, our genetic code and also the basic cell structure has been programmed by influence of this cosmic movement and this is taken into account within all basic principles of Vastu Shastra. The existence of a well-regulated magnetism sustains a positive energetic field within our ambience supporting the preservation of physical health and mental vitality.

In order to provide a good Vastu space wave matrix solar radiation is also to be crucially kept in mind besides the magnetic forces. Because of our planet’s movement these rays reach us permanently from the east and doing so they adjust the molecules in our atmosphere differently. In addition to the sun and the electric forces, also the five elements in the existing environment are involved now: the existence of fire and air, the substances of the earth and its plants as well as the winds and water. All of them do contribute to the concert of waves and influence the relation between the human being, earth and cosmos.

Within Vastu a certain system of room and waves is being described which is favourable or supportive as regards the physical and mental development of man.

Within vastu all areas of living are clearly defined and have their own significance and position in a room. Therefore when designing an area of living, the elements are being allocated – figuratively room functions, building services engineering and, last but not least, the rooms used by individual persons. In doing so it is particularly important that the centre of a home - in vastu called brahmastanam – is free and open so that a strong energetic field can develop. Everybody knows about the positive quality of inner courtyards or cloisters. By means of an open brahmasthanam, energy can flow through all areas of living and nourish the residents. When the heart space is fully furnished or loaded regarding the neutral and free flow in the “heart”, this causes not only discomfort in a flat, but also needless stress of the mind.

A holistic therapy for the space, and for the persons living in it.

Vastu architects understand room as a living body that represents qualities of our personality or a business such as our body does it. So it’s the residents with their individual potentials that take centre stage of any planning or consultation. According to the residents’ particular qualities, the principles of Vastu Shastra are used differently, especially as regards their weighting.

According to the therapeutic approaches of vastu-shastra the general rules of vedic architecture and geometrics should be tuned to the individual person and his/her constitution (prakriti), personal history (karma) and personal goals (dharma) by an experienced expert. A consultation that only takes into account the correction of rooms without looking closer at its residents remains incomplete. The following motto applies: “One looks for rooms that suit oneself”. Within vastu-shastra a person, which is on his/her way to more vital energy, holism and success, is primarily treated and accompanied by his/her “dress”. In this way vastu can be understood as a holistic therapy not only for the space, but also for the persons living in it.

Example from practical experiences with Vastu

A married couple came to me asking me to examine their house according to Vastu principles. It turned out that the couple wasn’t able to sleep well in their northerly sleeping room on the first floor (as is was in a high-frequency area) and that also the toilet in the north-east of the first floor might cause disorders in cell metabolism. The entrance, located in the unfavourable southern sector of the east, was not ideal and might be the result for the very few existing friendships. After joint talks it soon turned out that not only sleep but also those typical activities linked to marriage have come to rest, which left the couple sleeping in separated rooms very often, too – this without great success as regards their sleeping quality. In my consultation I was primarily focussing on the sleeping place (relocation to the southwest on the first floor with a sleeping direction of the head to the south) and the entrance area (relocation of the real estate’s entrance area to the fifth and centred eastern quadrant) and suggested seven further individual steps in addition.

Seven weeks later I received an e-mail saying: “It’s incredible, but we both feel very well in our new sleeping areas and we enjoy the pleasures again… . After many years I am able to sleep through again and I considerably more often wake up feeling refreshed … and then my wart, which I haven’t been able to get rid of for many years, disappeared only a few days after we stopped using the toilet on the first floor (N/E), where we now only brush our teeth and have a shower… . Then something strange happened: We commissioned the relocation of our front door and travelled to the USA. Without knowing that it was the very day our front door’s relocation at home, we received two invitations by former friends from the USA and also from Switzerland that day… .

Vastu-Shastra is a special tool for recognising connections between room, human being and nature. Designing living spaces often is an underestimated factor as regards health and success in life.
